ITIN vs EIN: What Non-Residents Actually Need

ITIN and EIN are different. Learn which one non-resident LLC owners need, when an ITIN is required, and how to get an EIN without an SSN.

Non-residents often confuse the ITIN and the EIN. They are different numbers for different purposes — here is what you actually need.

What is an EIN?

The federal tax ID of your company. Required for banking, Stripe, PayPal and business tax filings. We obtain it without an SSN.

What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for a person (not a company), used when an individual must file a US personal tax return but has no SSN. Many non-resident LLC owners do not need one.

Which do you need?

To run a US LLC you need an EIN. An ITIN is only needed in specific personal-tax situations. We advise based on your case and handle the EIN.
